Man City Sources: Significant Kovacic update today

Mateo Kovacic is considering his future at Man City following Ilkay Gundogan’s return, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the midfielder leaving the Etihad would “come as a surprise.”

If he wanted to leave the Premier League champions, the 30-year-old would be able to secure a “lucrative” package in Saudi Arabia this January.

Even though Pep Guardiola doesn’t typically prevent players from leaving, he isn’t looking to weaken his own squad in the January transfer window and wouldn’t be willing to let him go.

The return of Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona has raised question marks for Kovacic about how much football he will get when everyone is fit and available.

The former Man City captain returning to the club could push the Croatian out in the January transfer window.

Kovacic has been a regular feature in Guardiola’s team so far this season, having started all three of their Premier League games.

The central midfielder found the back of the net against his former club Chelsea on the opening day of the season.

He was used frequently last season by Man City, playing 46 times in all competitions for the club.

Kovacic is under contract at the Etihad until 2027, which puts the club in a strong negotiating position if he does decide to leave.

Guardiola’s team will be back in action on 14 September against Brentford when club football returns.
