Kris Boyd has slammed SFA chief Ian Maxwell for not addressing the grievance put forward by Rangers with regards to the officiating howler against Celtic.
Gers were hard done by with the decision that could’ve seen them being given a penalty before the shootout in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday, 15 December.
However, instead of making a promise to tackle the issue of poor refereeing, Maxwell joked about that issue leading to increased views on YouTube.
Boyd told the Scottish Sun on 21 December: “By urging Patrick Stewart to demand answers over the cup final spot-kick howler, I warned that far too many people regarded Rangers penalty rows as a joke. I didn’t expect Ian Maxwell to be the next to chuckle.
“Why was the SFA chief executive taking the Premier Sports Cup final controversy so lightly in midweek?
“I don’t remember him laughing when Scott McTominay’s goal was ruled out for Scotland in Spain, or when Stuart Armstrong didn’t get a penalty against Hungary at the Euros.
“Oh, the SFA were pretty serious then. But when it’s a controversy over a Rangers penalty, it seems to be all a bit of fun. Well, let me tell you, this is a serious matter.
“Maxwell shouldn’t have waited until Wednesday to address an issue which has dominated the Scottish football agenda all week. And he shouldn’t have laughed and joked about a ‘spike’ in viewing figures on the SFA’s YouTube channel to watch The VAR Review Show.
“He should have gone straight to Collum’s door early on Monday morning to thrash out a plan for driving up standards in refereeing in this country.”
Rangers will surely be raging at the shambolic handling of the situation
The SFA’s handling of the penalty controversy from the Scottish League Cup final has been nothing short of shambolic, contributing significantly to the club’s justified agitation.
Maxwell’s response, characterised by levity rather than the seriousness the situation demanded, starkly contrasts with the SFA’s approach to other refereeing controversies, suggesting a lack of consistency and respect for the gravity of the issue at hand.
The delay in addressing the clear officiating error, coupled with Maxwell’s casual remark about increased YouTube views, undermines the integrity of the sport and the expectations of accountability from football’s governing body.
This flippant attitude not only trivialises Rangers’ legitimate grievances but also fails to reassure fans and clubs that the SFA is committed to improving refereeing standards.
Such a response from the SFA’s leadership only fuels the perception of bias and incompetence, leaving clubs like Gers feeling neglected and unfairly treated in their pursuit of justice on the field.
Boyd echoes the words of every fan of the Ibrox outfit and such things need to be amplified for there to be any real change.
In other Rangers news, the SFA president has namedropped the club as a £7million development has emerged recently.
