Darren Bent believes Timo Werner would be worth £100million if “he could finish” after watching Tottenham beat Manchester City on Wednesday (30 October).
The German scored the opening goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Ange Postecoglou knocked Pep Guardiola’s weakened side out of the EFL Cup.
Werner is often criticised for his lack of ability when bearing down on goal, even despite more than 150 goals to his name at club level, and he showed no fear when firing past Stefan Ortega.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Thursday (31 October, 4:23pm), Bent said: “If he could finish, he would be worth £100million. His pace gets them out of so many situations. You literally can’t catch him.
“When he doesn’t have to think about the finish, like his goal [v Man City], it goes in.”
Timo Werner continues to baffle after Tottenham v Manchester City
Given how clinical Werner has proved he can be in front of goal, especially during his time in the Bundesliga, it always seems strange to see him lacking confidence with Spurs.
Many eyebrows were raised after the club decided to extend his loan spell after the 2023/24 campaign, and those concerns have continued into the current season.
The goal against Man City is the player that football fans have come to know and love, one which Spurs fans will be hoping to see much more of, but he managed to miss multiple other chances in the same game.
He even has 24 goals in 57 caps for Germany at international level, which just raises more questions about his relative failures in England with Spurs and Chelsea.
Werner has yet to hit the back of the net in the Premier League this season, only bagging twice last term, but Postecoglou clearly sees enough in him to keep throwing him into the left-wing role in Son Heung-min’s absence.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs are bracing for Premier League bids for Archie Gray in January.
