Ange Postecoglou cannot continue to use Pape Sarr as a bit-part player at Tottenham after his display against Manchester City on 30 October.
Sarr made just his sixth start of the season in Spurs’ 2-1 EFL Cup fourth-round victory in North London, scoring what proved to be the decisive goal with a well-placed, first-time strike from 25 yards.
However, the Senegalese international was hooked at the break by Postecoglou with Spurs leading 2-1, and although his replacement Yves Bissouma was superb, substituting Sarr was a harsh decision.
Of his 14 appearances so far this campaign, eight have come off the bench, and his first-half showing to dump out the Premier League champions should be enough to ensure more minutes for Sarr.
Pape Sarr proves a key cog at both ends for Tottenham
Given just 45 minutes in a high-octane and high-stakes cup tie against the Citizens, Sarr’s brilliant finish from a corner taken short was without doubt the Lilywhites’ biggest moment of quality in the final third.
That 25-yard strike was the 22-year-old’s only effort on goal in the first half, maintaining a 100 per cent accuracy for both shots and aerial duels, as well as completing all 12 of his attempted passes [FotMob].
Sarr’s winning goal came with just 0.02 xG behind it and was a pinpoint finish to say the least, but it was in defence where the buzzing, pressing presence of the Senegal international really came to the fore.
Putting in seven defensive actions in his 45 minutes, Sarr attempted three ball recoveries and tackles apiece, completing two of the latter at a success rate of 67 per cent [FotMob].
Heavily involved in the midfield battle as the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Matheus Nunes fought to get City back into the game, Sarr contested nine duels in total, winning five and a free-kick in the process.
While both Sarr and Bissouma, his replacement at the base of Postecoglou’s midfield, did pick up yellow cards in their respective halves, it’s clear that in the former, the Australian has a dynamic midfielder on his hands, who if he utilises to the same extent as last season, could be a difference-maker for Spurs.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has made his final decision on the permanent future of one misfiring Lilywhite forward.
