Todd Cantwell set to leave Rangers this summer - report

Todd Cantwell is now expected to leave Rangers as Philippe Clement continues his squad overhaul, according to Rangers Review.

Chris Jack reported via the outlet’s website on 3 July that amid “uncertainty” over the future of other prominent first-team players, such as Connor Goldson and captain James Tavernier, the English midfielder’s exit is seen to be on the cards.

Nils Koppen is said to be working on a list of further signings this summer, with five already confirmed, and in that context the club are willing to “listen to offers” for multiple members of the current squad, with the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers both wanted.

Cantwell only arrived in Glasgow a year and a half ago and was arguably the Light Blues’ best player for half a season under Michael Beale, but his second season didn’t match up.

Philippe Clement may have got more out of a number of Beale’s signings from last summer, including the likes of Dujon Sterling and Cyriel Dessers, but Cantwell never looked as good under the Belgian.

They didn’t get off to a great start as the manager substituted the former Norwich man before half-time against Aris Limassol on 30 November, with Keith Jackson claiming in the Daily Record four days later that their relationship was already strained to “breaking point”.

Clement frequently preferred Tom Lawrence in the number 10 role even after letting the ineffective Sam Lammers leave, and Cantwell’s performances rarely balanced out the regular criticism he has received for supposed on-pitch antics and social media episodes.

The latest instance of the latter came within the past week as he branded a Gers supporter a “weapon” on Instagram after some criticism [Daily Record, 29 June].

At his best the 26-year-old has proven he can be a star in the Scottish Premiership but Clement has never seemed especially convinced so it is little surprise that the Rangers boss would be ready to sacrifice him to bring in more of his own signings.

But whether there is a market for him in the same way there is for Dessers or Lammers remains to be seen.
