Tottenham are eyeing a move for new England star Angel Gomes, according to The Sun.
The report, printed on the newspaper’s online edition (11 September), suggests Spurs are among a host of teams interested in bringing the Lille midfielder to the Premier League.
Newcastle United, Liverpool and Gomes’ former club Manchester United are credited with an interest, as are Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.
Gomes made his debut for England over the international break and has seemingly caught the eye of some of Europe’s big hitters.
What can Angel Gomes bring to Tottenham?
The 24-year-old is a product of the Manchester United academy, but headed for Lille in August 2020 after failing to nail down a regular first-team slot.
Since then, Gomes has slowly become one of the best midfielders in the league, and recorded 10 assists in Ligue 1 last season, which helped the club finish in a Champions League spot for the current campaign.
While Spurs’ midfield hosts some top talents, Gomes could bring something new to the centre of the park, as an aggressive ball carrier with top passing ability.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has implemented both Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray into the side this season, and has Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur at his disposal.
However, Bentancur has an unfortunate injury record, while the likes of Gray and Bergvall are still fledgling talents, so Gomes could bring a new aspect to the team.
The difficulty may come in fending off interest from elsewhere with Gomes likely to have no shortage of suitors if clubs look to make a move either in January or next summer.
