Tottenham are eyeing Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Burnley’s James Trafford ahead of the January transfer window, as per a report from The Sun.
The lack of depth between the posts for Ange Postecoglou’s side has recently been highlighted by the ankle injury suffered by first choice shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario against Man City.
Spurs therefore look as though they will be moving to sign a new goalkeeper as cover for the Italian when the transfer market reopens at the turn of the year, with Fraser Forster currently deputising.
They are expected to watch Patterson between now and the turn of the year as they consider him for that role, amid suggestions Sunderland could sell for the right price.
Trafford is another option Tottenham are said to have considered, although the Burnley man would apparently not be cheap.
Whoever comes in to take that role would also have to settle for being second choice behind Vicario once he returns from his injury.
Anthony Patterson more suitable target for Tottenham
Football Insider Opinion
It feels as though there is an argument that Patterson could be a better option to fill this role for Spurs come January considering the relative costs involved.
Trafford has already had a spell in the Premier League with Burnley last season, and he did not always convince in that time.
He could therefore be a risk for Tottenham to turn to especially if they do have to pay a significant amount for him.
While he has not played in the top-flight so far, Patterson has always looked solid for Sunderland, and has previously been the subject of interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool (The Sun).
That indicates he could well be a reliable figure between the posts, and it might even be a coup for Postecoglou’s side to secure his signing.
It may not be the only they make in January as attacking targets have also emerged, which would send a message to the rest of the league.
Patterson does therefore feel like a goalkeeper Tottenham should be pursuing, providing they feel he can be convinced to play back-up to Vicario.
