Tottenham likely to block Archie Gray loan return to Leeds United

Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to sanction a loan return to Leeds United for Archie Gray, according to Ian Darke.

The TNT Sports broadcaster believes Spurs’ European schedule is what will stand in the way of a temporary move to aid Leeds’ promotion push.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are still fighting on several fronts this year and are expected to need the bulk of their squad.

Darke, speaking to MOT Leeds News [18 November], said: “What legislates against Gray going back to Leeds on loan is, I think, Tottenham in the Europa League.

“They need a deep squad because they’ve got a hectic schedule. If they only had the Premier League and the domestic cups to think about, it would maybe be a different story.

“Leeds fans would love to see him come back and help deliver promotion, but I’d be more than a little surprised if Spurs allowed it to happen.”

As Tottenham look to break their trophy drought now spanning nearly 17 years, the need is vital to keep a deep squad at Postecoglou’s disposal.

Injuries and suspensions have blighted Spurs at times this season and keeping a versatile, developing prospect like Gray will be deemed important.

The 18-year-old also already has what it takes to be involved in a fight with plenty at stake, having been a regular in a promotion-chasing Leeds outfit last season.

Despite having not yet started in the Premier League, Gray has made five top-flight appearances and started six games in other competitions, including the Europa League.

Spurs are considered one of the favourites to go the distance which would mean a rigorous fixture schedule throughout the campaign.
