Transfer Guru: Everton working on deal to sign forward

Everton are working on a deal sign a new striker in the January transfer window after their struggles in front of goal so far this season.

This is according to former Man United and Blackburn Rovers chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that they have already begun assessing their options.

The Toffees have scored just ten goals in 12 games so far and failed to find the net against Brentford despite taking 27 shots at goal – only five of which were on target.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored just twice in 12 appearances this season, having scored just eight in 38 last season, while Beto has five goals in 47 games across that same time frame.

As a result, the transfer team at Goodison Park are prioritising a move to sign a centre-forward in January who can provide more of a threat in front of goal.

Brown explained that Sean Dyche is also keen to find a striker who is capable to take the pressure off of the defence by holding up play while adding to their threat going forward.

Everton plan to sign new striker in January amid relegation fear

Everton have failed to find the net on six occasions already this season, including going without a goal in each of their last three games, and are currently just two points outside of the relegation zone.

Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment including over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the Toffees will look to land a new striker to help ease their relegation fears.

They want to sign a new forward in January,” he told Football Insider.

“And from what I’ve heard, they’ve already started looking at who might be available.

“Neither Calvert-Lewin or Beto do enough in front of goal to offer you the impact you really need.

“It’s been very frustrating for Sean Dyche and his staff.

“You can hold your own against the opposition for 60 minutes and then you’ve got to take your chance when it comes, but you don’t ever feel confident they will.

“So that means if they want to take points from games, they have to keep clean sheets.

“Then that puts pressure on the defenders because they become the difference between winning or drawing and losing.

“Dyche will want a striker who can do a bit of everything in terms of holding the ball up and giving them a bit of respite at the back.

“But first and foremost they need to score goals – that’s the type of player they’re looking for.”
