Nedim Bajrami has been slammed by Ally McCoist for what he did leading up to an opportunity OGC Nice had against Rangers in the first half.
The Gers travelled to the Allianz Riviera on 28 November in the Europa League, looking to get something from France to secure their position in the group stages and went into half-time 3-0 up.
The Ligue 1 outfit a big chance in the opening 10 minutes that led to a VAR check for a penalty, but commentating on TNT Sports [28 November], McCoist was fuming with Bajrami for not closing down the opposition in the lead-up to it.
“First thing you’ve got to say, I can’t believe Bajrami switching off here,” he said. “Unbelievable. He just completely switches off.”
Vaclav Cerny, Mohamed Diomande and Hamza Igamane went on to give the Gers a convincing lead at the interval.
Nedim Bajrami needs to do more in Rangers v Nice
The Albanian has been one of the best players for Rangers this season, but the attacker’s work rate is something he needs, ironically, to work on.
McCoist is entirely correct to lambast the 25-year-old for not reacting to the threat despite tracking back into a position where he likely had the advantage over the Nice attacker.
The Light Blues need to ensure they are at their best at both ends of the pitch, with the Olympique Lyon game serving as an example of what can happen if the Bears switch off.
Against Les Gones, Rangers had several opportunities to take the lead but failed to do so and were punished 4-1 by the French outfit for making mistakes at the back.
One might argue that Bajrami is in the team to score and create opportunities, but the defensive side of the game is equally important.
The Albanian needs to ensure he is fully switched on, but thankfully for him the goals from Cerny and Diomande have his side in a very strong position, so no harm was done.
