Swap deals seem to be coming back into fashion in English football.
Indeed, with Profit and Sustainability rules cracking down on big spending as of late, swap deals are becoming more and more common.
Aston Villa did a part-exchange deal for Douglas Luiz earlier in this window, while Archie Gray joined Tottenham in a move that saw Joe Rodon go the other way.
Spurs and Villa have both done swap deals already this summer, and another of these types of deals has been suggested.
Indeed, Tottenham have apparently made an offer for Jacob Ramsey that would’ve seen Giovani Lo Celso head to Villa Park.
Tottenham’s bid for Ramsey was knocked back, but Spurs maintain an interest in the midfielder.
Speaking on Last Word on Spurs, Darren Lewis has been discussing Tottenham’s interest in Ramsey, and he says he would be very surprised if this deal actually came off.
Jacob Ramsey to Tottenham not likely
Lewis shared what he knows about the midfielder and Spurs’ interest.
“I think it would be a terrific signing for you, but I would be very surprised if Villa were to sell or if Ramsey were to go.
“I think with Villa in the Champions League they’re going from strength to strength. Everyone saw how good a coach Emery is and what he did there.
“Ramsey is only 23 and he has such a high ceiling. As things stand, Villa have said they don’t want to sell. Even though you could offer the money and offer Lo Celso as well, I don’t think he would want to go, I think he would want to play Champions League football next season.”
Ramsey should stay
Ramsey’s best bet is to stay at Aston Villa this summer.
As Lewis says, Ramsey is only going to develop under Unai Emery, and having spent so many years at Villa developing through the academy set-up, why would he now leave as soon as Champions League football is on offer.
Ramsey has the chance to do something very special with Villa this season, and it’s hard to blame him if he wants to stay with his boyhood club.
