Lucas Bergvall missed his opportunity to impress as Tottenham beat Manchester United on Sunday (29 September).

Ange Postecoglou’s men were already well on top before Bruno Fernandes’ sending-off at Old Trafford, with Brennan Johnson opening the scoring after just three minutes.

Dejan Kulusevski took advantage of the one-man advantage, netting just two minutes into the second half before the manager made a plethora of chances, including 18-year-old Bergvall.

Fans have been patiently waiting for the Swedish talent to be given his opportunity in the Spurs starting XI. He was certainly unlucky against Qarabag FK in the Europa League, with Radu Dragusin’s red card seeing him sacrificed.

With the best part of 20 minutes against Man United, Bergvall had a brilliant chance to show Postecoglou exactly why he should be in the starting XI more often, but that failed quite drastically.

Postecoglou was spotted “raging” at the youngster during the final 10 minutes of the match after choosing to unleash a shot from distance rather than passing to an unmarked Mikey Moore [Football London].

The Australian then bellowed across the pitch at the player once again, having tried to find Moore on this occasion rather than find two of his unmarked teammates.

Lucas Bergvall frustrates Postecoglou in Tottenham win v Manchester United

Of course, at 3-0 up after Dominic Solanke got in on the action at Old Trafford, Bergvall likely wanted to try impressive passes and efforts on goal due to the comfortable lead.

However, it may have just sealed his spot on the bench for the foreseeable future as Postecoglou left the field frustrated with the midfielder’s short cameo against United.

Bergvall completed just 75 per cent of his passes, recorded a zero per cent shot accuracy – blazing high and wide with his only effort – and could only complete 50 per cent of his dribbles and ground duels won [FotMob].

The player is still adapting to life in North London, especially at a young age, but looking at his performance from his only start of the season against Coventry City in the EFL Cup, it’s been a tough start.

He could only accurately deliver 20 per cent of his attempted crosses and win 38 per cent of his ground duels, being hooked after just 62 minutes [FotMob].

There were positive signs, though. Bergvall won 100 per cent of his tackles, completed 87 per cent of his passes and 100 per cent of his long ball. He will develop with time.
