Tottenham were let down at a critical moment by Son Heung-min in their 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 (8 December), Troy Deeney said that Son’s effort, which he put wide of the far post after winning the ball in the final third – was “the one” for Spurs in a second straight defeat.

Son did find the net in the sixth minute of second-half injury time for Ange Postecoglou’s side, but this was scant consolation as Chelsea overturned the Lilywhites’ early 2-0 advantage to go 4-2 up.

Deeney said: “This is the one – everybody stops.

“Son is one-v-one and at no point in this moment did I think ‘you’re going to score’. I thought maybe (he) should slide it across to (Timo) Werner – you definitely have to hit the target.”

Son Heung-min embodies Tottenham troubles in Chelsea defeat

Son was by no means terrible against one of Spurs’ biggest London rivals, but Lilywhites fans know better than most that football matches are decided in the biggest moments.

Scoring once from four efforts on goal throughout [SofaScore], Son produced 1.08 xG in total but should have had more, eventually netting by far his easiest chance but missing the most important one.

With two big chances missed, Son was also caught offside twice and lost possession on three occasions [FotMob], with his 50 per cent shot accuracy equalled by his success rate from two attempted crosses.

A further three defensive actions and three ball recoveries – including a clearance and interception apiece – were typical of Son’s efforts, but he was helpless to prevent Chelsea scoring four goals in a row.

Winning just two of his six ground duels, a success rate of 33 per cent, Son – like many of his team-mates – wasn’t completely at the races against Chelsea, and despite scoring late on, it’s his key miss with the game in the balance which the South Korea will be remembered for in a frustrating defeat.

In other Tottenham news, one Spurs loanee put Postecoglou on notice with what he did recently on FA Cup duty.
