Dominic Solanke could be the saviour Ange Postecoglou needs after his “fantastic” goal for Tottenham in their 4-3 defeat against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
Thanks to the “embarrassing” performance of Marc Cucurella, Spurs saw themselves go 2-0 up within the first 20 minutes as former Bournemouth talisman Solanke managed to capitalise on his first mistake.
The striker was delivered an inch-perfect ball from the wing after surprise starter Brennan Johnson closed the Spaniard down and turned possession in Spurs’ favour.
Speaking live on Sky Sports Premier League (8 December, 16:37pm), Carragher shared his thoughts on Tottenham’s first goal.
“Big mistake by that man [Marc Cucurella], but [Dominic] Solanke does absolutely fantastic he [Cucurella] just loses his footing, but credit to [Brennan] Johnson on that side,” he said.
“He picks it up and then he’s away, you just look as [Levi] Colwill and Solanke in the middle, he just darts in front of him and just throws his right foot at it”.
Dominic Solanke could be the Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham need
The 2024/25 season has been a fairly strange one for Spurs. Thanks to their 4-3 defeat against the Blues on Sunday, they now find themselves 11th in the Premier League.
As per Sofascore, in the 90 minutes that Solanke was on the pitch, he made himself a key cog in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
Throughout the clash, he maintained a pass accuracy of 85 per cent and had 27 touches of the ball.
The striker had three shots throughout the game, and while only one made it into the back of the net, the fact he was getting into the positions to make those efforts viable shows how pivotal he is.
Not only was he key in the final third, but he also made two key passes throughout the game and also managed to create a big chance.
While he was used as a number nine, he was also defensively sound throughout. He made three clearances, one tackle and only lost possession of the ball six times.
If Tottenham want to get into the Champions League spots at the end of the season, players such as Solanke are going to have to step up and prove their worth, otherwise, it could end up being curtains for Postecoglou.
