Djed Spence has made just eight appearances for Tottenham since signing from Middlesbrough in 2022.
The full-back has failed to make the desired impact at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, being sent on loan to Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa over the last few seasons.
However, Spence made an unexpected comeback under Ange Postecoglou’s leadership during Spurs’ pre-season tour, displaying impressive cameos against Hearts, QPR, Vissel Kobe and Bayern Munich.
Of course, with Pedro Porro occupying the position, it would be extremely difficult for any right-back to break into the starting XI, but the latest update might just be the final nail in Spence’s coffin.
Ange Postecoglou selects Tottenham squad for Europa League
Postecoglou has left Spence – who was once dubbed “absolutely brilliant” by Gary Lineker – out of the Europa League squad for the upcoming group stage games, with the manager having to choose a 25-man squad [Football London].
While the player has managed just 18 minutes in the Premier League this season, it will come as a huge disappointment, especially when it suggests game time will be extremely limited in North London.
His last start came against Bayern Munich in pre-season, and although he picked up a yellow card, he managed to maintain an impressive 93 per cent pass completion, won 80 per cent of his tackles, and entered into 11 ground duels [FotMob].
Despite not getting a look-in under Postecoglou, Spence ranks in the top 98 percentile for blocks, the top 81 percentile for clearances and the top 76 percentile for aerials won [FBref].
He also wins 1.23 aerial duels per 90 minutes – placing him in the top 76 percentile – so he clearly has the qualities needed to succeed when given the chance.
Although Porro and Destiny Udogie are the obvious number-one choices, they will need backup in both the Premier League and Europa League, but this decision suggests that Spence is not seen as a concrete option at all.
