Lucas Bergvall has demonstrated to Ange Postecoglou that he is ready for a first-team opportunity at Tottenham next season.

Spurs got their pre-season preparations underway with a 5-1 victory over Hearts on Wednesday (17 July).

It was a positive return to action for Postecoglou and his players, with Brennan Johnson opening the scoring in the first half.

Lawrence Shankland equalised for the hosts just after half-time, but Spurs would go on to score four goals to secure a comfortable victory in Edinburgh.

It was Will Lankshear, Mikey Moore, Djed Spence and Ashley Phillips who all got themselves on the scoresheet.

However, it was the performance of Bergvall which is likely to have caught Postecoglou’s eye in Scotland.

As is usually the case during a pre-season friendly, Postecoglou made wholesale changes at half-time, with Bergvall coming on at the break.

With the 18-year-old having only recently arrived from Sweden, it would have been understandable if he looked nervous on the ball.

However, Bergvall instead looked comfortable in possession and even managed to grab himself an assist, playing in fellow Spurs youngster Moore.

In addition, he completed 88 per cent of his passes, with three of those being key, and created two big chances (SofaScore).

He also managed to provide one accurate cross into the box, which led to a Dane Scarlett header that was saved into the path of Phillips, who bundled the ball home.

While it is only a pre-season friendly, and Tottenham supporters would therefore be wise not to get too carried away, the early signs certainly look very positive.

With the UEFA Europa League and hopefully, more lengthy runs in the FA and Carabao Cups to come next season, there should be plenty of opportunities for Bergvall to feature under Postecoglou.

As per Spurs’ official website (16 July), the teenager has been handed the number 15 shirt at the club, indicating that he is a part of the first-team plans next season.

Young players such as Kobbie Mainoo and Lamine Yamal have demonstrated recently that age is just a number in the modern game.

And Spurs supporters will be hoping that Bergvall can become their breakout star.

In other Tottenham news, a Nico Williams transfer verdict has emerged after a Fabrizio Romano update.
