View: Ange loyalty towards 50% Tottenham man surely waning, Redknapp says weakness is clear

Tottenham players have been slammed by Jamie Redknapp after failing to help Guglielmo Vicario in the defeat to Arsenal on Sunday (15 September).

Ange Postecoglou suffered yet another defeat in the North London derby as his side fell to a 1-0 loss through Gabriel’s second-half header.

The warning signs had been there earlier in the encounter before the Brazilian blasted the ball into the net from barely six yards out.

This led to Redknapp criticising the Spurs players live on Sky Sports Main Event (15 September, 4:19pm).

He said: “Because people have seen Vicario’s weakness, they stick loads of players in front of him.

“Tottenham they have gone for man-to-man so they are all obsessed with their player and it is a little bit selfish.”

The Italian has always been somewhat susceptible to conceding from set pieces, corners in particular, if the opposition crowd around him.

This was no different against the Gunners as their players got in and around the 27-year-old and made life difficult for the keeper.

Last season, Vicario made up for this frailty with effective shot-stopping and this was a similar story against the Gunners.

This saw him make three saves and prevent 0.5 expected goals (xG) after facing 1.5 throughout the encounter against Mikel Arteta’s side [FotMob].

The former Empoli man wasn’t too great with the ball at his feet, however, given that he only registered 17 completed passes with an 81 per cent pass accuracy.

Add into this just three completed long balls, with a success rate of just 50 per cent, his ability on the ball could have been shown off more.

The goalkeeper did manage to make one high claim but it will be a concern that he also felt it to be necessary to make one punch.

It was a shaky showing from the Italian but he definitely needed more help from his teammates who hung him out to dry for the winner.

Given he has been regularly defended and selected by Postecoglou, questions must be asked as to whether that loyalty has gone too far.
