View: Ange must solve problem for Tottenham 20y/o after what happened y'day

Ange Postecoglou needs to find a solution for Tottenham striker Dane Scarlett.

Since bursting onto the scene in North London at a young age, Scarlett has struggled to establish himself at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Once a highly-rated young prospect, the striker will be celebrating his 21st birthday this season and is yet to make a real impact.

He has struggled during multiple loan spells, scoring just six times in 40 appearances for Portsmouth, while failing to find the back of the net at all and making just 12 appearances for Ipswich Town.

Scarlett is currently on loan in the Championship with Oxford United. However, just like his other two loan spells to EFL clubs, that isn’t going to plan either and has led to speculation that he could even be recalled in January.

Therefore, it is clear that Spurs have reached something of a crossroads when it comes to Scarlett. However, after what he did while on international duty, it is clear that the club should find a solution which doesn’t involve giving up on the player.

Tottenham striker Dane Scarlett shines for England’s Under-21s

No matter what is happening at club level, Scarlett will always find the back of the net while representing England, whatever age group he is playing with.

Having scored 12 times in 14 appearances for the Under-19s, and eight times in 18 outings for the Under-20s, otherwise known as the Elite League Squad (Transfermrkt), Scarlett began featuring for the Under-21s this year.

And he grabbed his first goal at that level on Tuesday (15 October), as the Young Lions secured top spot in their 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying group by thrashing Azerbaijan’s Under-21s 7-0 at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.

Having come off the bench in the 61st minute, Scarlett pounced on an error in the 85th minute, which allowed him to score from close range and add a sixth for England.

Therefore, it is clear that finding the back of the net is not an issue for Scarlett.

Many supporters will remember a certain Harry Kane, who one current Spurs star has been compared with, struggling on multiple loan spells before bursting onto the scene in North London in his early twenties.

As a result, Postecoglou absolutely shouldn’t give up on Scarlett.

Instead, when the striker returns from his loan with Oxford United, it is time to finally throw him in at the deep end and see what he can do for Tottenham, just as Mauricio Pochettino did with Kane all those years ago, to much success.
