Tottenham defender Radu Drăgușin has demonstrated to Ange Postecoglou that he is ready to make an impact in North London.
It has not been an ideal start to the season for Drăgușin.
The defender has started just three times in all competitions for Tottenham and was sent off after just seven minutes of Spurs’ 3-0 home win over Qarabağ in the UEFA Europa League (26 September).
With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven the starting pairing at the club, despite the former’s worrying form, the Europa League was a perfect chance for Drăgușin to play regularly and demonstrate what he is capable of.
Therefore, getting himself suspended in that competition was far from ideal for the 22-year-old.
It would have left Postecoglou with more questions than answers over the centre-back, and limited opportunities for Drăgușin to provide answers.
However, the centre-back will hope he has answered some of those questions after what he did while in action on international duty.
Tottenham star Radu Drăgușin shines for Romania
Drăgușin started and scored as Romania beat Cyprus 3-0 in the UEFA Nations League at the AEK Arena – George Karapatakis on Saturday (12 October).
It was a rare start for the Romanian, and he made sure to take his opportunity with both hands.
In addition to netting his first Romania goal in the 36th minute, the central defender excelled on the ball, completing 98 per cent of his passes (Sofascore).
He also won two of his three ground duels, as well as one of his two aerial duels. Unfortunately for him, Drăgușin was dribbled past once by an opposition player.
However, he made up for it, making two clearances, one interception and one tackle, while only giving possession away on two occasions.
Finally, he was accurate with 100 per cent of his long balls on what was a relatively flawless night for the defender.
It was a clear message to Postecoglou that the centre-back is ready to put his mistakes behind him this season and make an impact.
While he likely hasn’t done enough yet to earn himself a Premier League start, he will have certainly reminded Postecoglou of his quality, with John Wenham even suggesting he could eventually replace Romero.
As a result, a few more impressive performances in the Europa League and cup competitions could get him closer to a rare league start.
