Ange Postecoglou could make six changes when Tottenham travel to Coventry City in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (18 September).

It has been an incredibly poor start to the 2024/25 season for Spurs.

Postecoglou’s side were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (15 September), piling on the misery for the Australian and his players.

Therefore, the Spurs boss will be desperate to get some confidence back among his squad with a much-needed victory against Coventry City.

However, the EFL Championship side are not to be taken lightly. As a result, while Postecoglou will want to use the cup as an opportunity to hand some fringe players minutes, he must be careful not to make too many changes.

Should Spurs be knocked out of the cup in midweek, Postecoglou could suddenly find himself under real pressure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Therefore, his team selection for the clash at the Coventry Building Society Arena will be very important.

Guglielmo Vicario is likely to continue between the sticks after making three saves from inside the box against Arsenal (Sofascore).

In defence, Postecoglou could look to hand minutes to Ben Davies and Djed Spence, allowing Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie the opportunity to rest.

Cristian Romero could be dropped after once again not looking his best against the Gunners. Radu Drăgușin would likely come in for the Argentine. However, Postecoglou will want some continuity in his backline.

Therefore, Micky van de Ven is likely to start alongside Drăgușin after making seven clearances and completing 90 per cent of his passes against Mikel Arteta’s side.

In midfield, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski are likely to make away. The latter completed just 71 per cent of his passes and failed to provide an accurate cross from five attempts against the Gunners, while the former lost both ground duels he contested.

Both players were also booked, and Postecoglou could look to hand minutes to Pape Matar Sarr and 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall in their place.

James Maddison will likely get the nod in midfield despite yet another underwhelming display in the North London derby.

Going forward, Postecoglou could call on Dominic Solanke and Heung-min Son despite their struggles against Arsenal.

Solanke failed to register a shot on target while winning just 40 per cent of his ground duels, while Son was successful with just 50 per cent of his dribble attempts and also failed to have a shot on target.

On the right, Brennan Johnson is likely to make way. The Welshman was poor last time out, managing just 26 touches of the ball, the least of any player that started against Arsenal – including Vicario.

In his place, Wilson Odobert could be handed an opportunity to make an impact.
