Rangers were at the receiving end of a harsh defeat in their Scottish League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday when they were beaten on penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw.
Throughout the clash, the game was very end-to-end with neither side sitting back at any point of the game, which made for rather good viewing.
Of course, Rangers fans were desperate to come away from Hampden Park victorious but, unfortunately, that wasn’t the way the cookie crumbled on 15 December.
There were many points in the game when Philippe Clement’s men could have got an extra goal to send them further ahead but one moment that particularly stands out is when the Gers found themselves in a four-versus-two situation and failed to get the ball into the back of the net.
Rangers were on the counter-attack after Callum McGregor lost the ball just outside of the Gers’ box and instead of going 2-0 up, Nedim Bajrami hit the ball straight into Cameron Carter-Vickers and failed to capitalise on the opportunity.
This specific moment in the game was dubbed “erratic” by journalist Joshua Barrie who highlighted the Gers’ attacking line as a problem area for them at the moment.
“Someone like Hamza Igamane doesn’t do well in that for that four-versus-two chance, there was an erratic nature to Rangers in the final third that Celtic didn’t have for that [Nicolas-Gerrit] Kuhn goal,” he said on the Scottish Football Podcast (17 December).
Philippe Clement needs to make additions to his Rangers attack in the summer
With the January transfer window now just around the corner, changes are expected to be made at Ibrox before the window closes.
Rangers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and, as the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane are both already being linked with moves away, it’s clear that attacking reinforcement should be one of Clement’s top priorities.
Of course, the fact that John Souttar is now out for several weeks also makes the centre-back role a key area that needs bolstering but if they want to put up a late title charge, some stronger attackers are going to be needed within the Gers’ ranks.
Only time will tell what the Belgian chooses to do but at the moment, it feels highly likely that a few new faces will be welcomed through the Ibrox doors which will no doubt be music to the ears of fans.
In other Rangers news, the Gers now have a Premier League midfielder on their radar ahead of the January transfer window.
