Philippe Clement could collapse under the pressure of the Rangers crowd if Jim Goodwin’s Dundee United prediction comes true.
Speaking to the Courier (21 November), United coach Goodwin said his side will be keen to play on the ongoing tensions at Ibrox by fuelling them further when they face the Gers on 23 November.
Clement is growing more unpopular with the Ibrox faithful seemingly by the week, and despite the Bears’ boardroom receiving much of the crowd’s ire, the Belgian won’t be immune to criticism come Saturday.
Goodwin said: “Going to Ibrox is a challenge, but a number of teams have had decent success against Rangers this season.
“We also understand what is going on there. Can we use some of that negativity surrounding them to our advantage?
“We want to set the stall out early – try to get some nervous tension around the place.”
Philippe Clement’s future could rest on Rangers v Dundee United
As Clement prepares for the longest stretch of the season between international breaks, pressure is mounting for the Belgian to bring his side back into Scottish Premiership title contention.
The Light Blues have fallen nine points behind both Aberdeen and Celtic at the top of the table, and upon their return to league action, nothing less than a win will do against Goodwin’s Tangerines.
Gers’ poor form on the domestic front hasn’t prevented Clement from being linked with the Belgium national team job, but he – like incumbent Domenico Tedesco – remains in post for the time being.
Having been backed to oversee an overhaul of the squad this summer alongside the recently-promoted Nils Koppen, and signing a long-term contract, Clement looks to be safe from the sack on paper.
However, with a new chairman soon to be in post at Ibrox [Chris Jack, 13 November], Clement may be the first domino to fall if Dundee United’s game-plan works a treat and they come away from Govan with all three points.
In other Rangers news, one Ibrox regular has been backed to succeed James Tavernier as Gers captain after his recent displays.
