Harry Tyrer being benched and out of favour at Blackpool will surely see Everton recall the young goalkeeper in January.

The Blackpool Gazette reported on 21 November that the Tangerines could be on the hunt for a new first-choice goalkeeper in the January transfer window, despite signing Tyrer on loan just last summer.

Tyrer was Blackpool’s first-choice for their opening eight matches of the League One season, but has since been dropped for Richard O’Donnell and restricted to EFL Trophy appearances in recent weeks.

Should another stopper join Blackpool’s ranks in the January window, Tyrer would be knocked further down the pecking order at Bloomfield Road, and surely make a return to Goodison Park inevitable.

Harry Tyrer recall the best move for Everton and Blackpool

Loaning young players out to lower-league sides is an English football transfer strategy seemingly as old as the game itself, but is always done to ensure that those starlets are given regular first-team minutes.

While goalkeepers’ game-time is naturally much harder to come by than outfield players, the reasoning for sending Tyrer out on loan remains the same, with the 22-year-old’s development imperative.

Sitting on the bench for all-but EFL Trophy matches won’t do much to speed this along in Everton’s eyes, and as such the Toffees could look to send the young stopper elsewhere in the January window.

Tyrer is yet to make his first-team debut for the Blues with England international Jordan Pickford the undisputed number one, but his performances in pre-season provided plenty of encouragement.

Before January arrives, Tyrer could well have re-established himself as first choice between Blackpool’s sticks, but it remains to be seen if the Toffees feel Bloomfield Road is the best place for him to blossom.

In other Everton news, the Blues are still playing a waiting game over an unresolved PSR dispute regarding stadium interest.
