Everton should be worried about their loanee Harry Tyrer after he was dropped from Blackpool’s starting XI due to his recent form between the sticks.

The goalkeeper joined the Seasiders in the summer transfer window to get some extra first-team experience under his belt after a stellar season with National League side Chesterfield last term.

While the ‘keeper is still just 22 years old and is bound to make the odd mistake here and there, it feels like he’s been quite off the pace recently.

Many have touted Tyrer to be the Toffees’ next number one after Jordan Pickford but if he doesn’t manage to step it up a gear, things could soon take a turn for the worse.

Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette (29 October) Blackpool’s assistant manager, Steve Agnew, shared why Tyrer has been dropped from his starting XI.

“In the last few games we’ve conceded goals; we’re not saying that’s all down to the goalkeeper because it’s not, we made changes in the back four as well,” he said.

“It’s always a big call because you don’t change your goalkeeper very often. Harry has fitted in the dressing room well, but we’ve got Rich’s (O’Donnell) experience, and we felt we needed that voice behind the back line.

“Banksy (Steve Banks) will have a good chat with Harry. We’re there to support all of the players, all we want is maximum performance out of every player.

“Harry has done well, but we had conceded a few goals and we wanted to give Rich the number one jersey tonight.”

Everton need Harry Tyrer to re-find his form from last season

While the move from the National League to League One is undoubtedly a step up in terms of difficulty, it still feels like the youngster should have been doing better.

In his last three games for the club Tyrer conceded nine goals in League One whereas, in his first four games for the Seasiders, he only conceded two.

It shows a notable dip and it could make Everton regret the fact they handed him an extension to his stay at Goodison Park back in April.

While a dip in form isn’t the be-all and end-all by any means, it certainly feels like things could have been going a lot better.

Indeed, Blackpool’s manager Steve Bruce currently finds himself away from the club but upon his return, Tyrer could be afforded another opportunity to prove his worth.

If this doesn’t happen, however, the Toffees will likely be worried that their future Pickford replacement could be heading in a downward spiral.

It’s still early days of course but, at the moment, it doesn’t feel like things could be going much worse for the 22-year-old than they are now.
