Dave Challinor has waxed lyrical about Tyler Onyango after the Everton loanee shone for Stockport County in their 4-1 League One win over Reading on Tuesday 29 October.

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes and excelled in a relatively unknown position at centre-back, providing the assist for Will Collar’s opener.

Challinor hailed Onyango’s recovery pace as “outstanding” and said that the youngster was a joy to watch when engaging in duels.

The manager also heaped praise on the Everton loanee for how he has adapted to his new role as a central defender and suggested that it could become his permanent position.

“Listen, Batey [Lewis Bate] was excellent, but for me, Tyler [Onyango] would have been Man of the Match, not just because of his performance, dealing with their threats, his recovery pace, his 1v1 defending was outstanding”, Challinor told Stockport’s in-house media (29 October).

“He stepped in and when someone of his physicality steps in, it’s certainly eye-catching and he is difficult to stop. He has had to be patient, but he has been great in training.

“He’s learning the position on the job in League One football and sometimes that’s tough. He had a tough 45 minutes against Barnsley [in his start on 28 September] and I hope now that’s the making of him and he can believe.

“Our supporters can see what type of player he is and what a good player he is. And again, it’s consistency, it’s being able to produce those types of performances week in, week out and if he does that, he has a real chance in what is a new position for him.”

Does Tyler Onyango have a future at Everton?

At 6’5″, Onyango has a chance to transition into a centre-back despite breaking through at Everton as a midfielder, but does he realistically have a long-term future at the club?

The Luton-born player’s association with the Toffees dates back to when he was eight years old and it would give fans a lot of joy to see an academy product make it big in the team.

While the Stockport County loan will help him get first-team experience under his belt, it is unlikely that he has a future at the Merseyside-based club.

He will be 22 by the time he returns to Finch Farm next summer and permanent exit is perhaps the best option for him to take his career forward.

That is not to say that the Toffees do not encourage academy talent. Youth players Roman Dixon and Harrison Armstrong have racked up a few appearances for Sean Dyche’s side this season.

Jenson Metcalfe, Francis Okoronkwo and Harry Tyrer are also tipped to do great things at the club.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have been tipped to secure one of the biggest deals in Europa after a £200million Bramley-Moore Dock reveal.
