James Tarkowski must be fearing losing his Everton starting XI role after Jake O’Brien scored on his debut against Preston.
The Toffees secured a 3-0 win in their penultimate pre-season clash at Deepdale against North End on Saturday (3 August).
The Republic of Ireland international came on at half-time for Tarkowski and got on the scoresheet just 15 minutes into his first Everton appearance with a low powerful effort from the edge of the box.
Throw in a positive defensive performance throughout and the 23-year-old may be demanding a starting XI spot already.
Jake O’Brien could replace James Tarkowski for Everton
Sean Dyche now has plenty of centre-back options at his disposal with the addition of the Irishman from Lyon in the past week.
It has to be said that with the former Crystal Palace man signing for £16.4 million [BBC Sport], he probably isn’t coming to play second fiddle too regularly.
O’Brien certainly hasn’t done himself any harm with his performance against Preston, adding a well-taken goal to an overly positive performance.
It has to be taken with a pinch of salt given that it was a friendly against a Championship side who weren’t at their best.
However, there is no doubt that Tarkowski will be looking over his shoulder given that the summer signing has youth on his side.
The former Burnley man helped form one of the best Premier League defences last season alongside Jarrad Branthwaite so certainly has plenty of credit left in the bank.
It will be interesting to see how Dyche starts the season and who he chooses as the season moves forward.
