Farhad Moshiri has a massive decision to make at Everton regarding the future of Jarrad Branthwaite.

He emerged as one of the stars of Sean Dyche’s side in a season dominated by Profit and Sustainability sanctions.

The Blues have managed to hold onto their star asset despite multiple approaches by Manchester United, and following their signing of Leny Yoro and can now plan for the upcoming season with the defender in their ranks.

Everton are prepared to offer Branthwaite a new deal, but he will only sign if they match the £160,00-a-week (£8.3million-a-year) package that Man United offered (Daily Mail, 25 July).

This is a pivotal decision to make for a club that has flirted with PSR over the past 12 months but one that the Toffees should be in no rush to make.

Everton cannot be held to ransom by Jarred Branthwaite

The 22-year-old has three years left on his current deal and Sean Dyche is under no pressure to sell his star centre-back with the club in a healthy position regarding Profit and Sustainability rules after the sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa.

Branthwaite has increased his stature with an impressive breakout campaign at the Blues, accumulating 41 appearances across all competitions.

Moshiri must decide whether to extend Branthwaite’s deal and offer him more than double his current £70,000-a-week salary.

Jarrad Branthwaite
Branthwaite could stay on Merseyside

Everton last had a talented defender come through the ranks at Goodison Park when John Stones debuted for the club in 2013. The feeling amongst Blues fans is that Branthwaite will follow in the footsteps of Stones and secure a big-money move from the club.

Man United’s interest cooling means they will hold on to him for another season at least, but the defender could try and force a move if his contract demands are not met.

The Toffees no longer need to sell and should Branthwaite replicate his form last season for another campaign, will attract interest from top clubs around Europe.

Whether the club offers him a new deal, will hinge on his future at the club as it doesn’t make sense to offer an improved deal if he is expected to leave at the end of the upcoming season.

It is a difficult decision for Moshiri, but he must decide soon so Branthwaite’s future at Everton is no longer the subject of speculation.
