View: Levy may be holding Tottenham back as Staveley takeover news emerges

Amanda Staveley remains interested in acquiring a minority stake in Tottenham after talks with Daniel Levy, according to Ian Ladyman.

There have been suggestions that the former Newcastle director has fully turned her attention towards buying AS Monaco [TBR Football], but the journalist, reporting via the Daily Mail’s website (21 December), states otherwise.

Meanwhile, a source has said that investment from the United States and the Middle East remains a possibility, although any minority investment – whether that be from Staveley or someone else – would be with a view to turning it into “something bigger” amid a lack of direction at Spurs.

The news that the North London giants are seeking investment is not new, but Daniel Levy may ultimately be the reason it is dragging on.

According to Ladyman, Daniel Levy, who has been serving as Spurs’ chairman since 2001, values the Lilywhites at £3.5billion – a figure deemed excessive by many.

For context, the consortium led by Todd Boehly bought Chelsea for £2.5b in 2022, while the Saudi Arabia-backed Public Investment Fund completed their takeover of Newcastle for £305million the previous year [Sky Sports & BBC].

Although anyone seeking a minority stake in the Premier League club would not have to shell out such an amount, the figures are likely to be determined by that valuation.

This could be a reason why Staveley, as well as other potential suitors, are reluctant to shake hands with Levy, especially considering they would perhaps want to take full control of Spurs down the line.

The chairman must, therefore, consider easing his stance if he wants to get the investment he is after and secure Tottenham’s long-term future.

Someone like Staveley could help release Levy’s handbrakes in North London.

In other Tottenham news, Jim White has said that this Spurs ace looked like a “wardrobe” in the 4-3 EFL Cup win over Manchester United on Thursday, 19 December.
