Manchester United will have to sell players to have any realistic chance of landing Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite, according to Mail Online.

The report [12 June] claims that Erik ten Hag – who now looks set to stay at Old Trafford ahead of next season – and the United recruitment team will have just £50million to spend this summer.

Everton have already slapped a price tag of £80m on the England defender, who is on the Three Lions’ standby list following a surprise omission from the final Euro 2024 squad by Gareth Southgate.

The Mail article read: “Only £50m cash is available for signings this summer with United needing to raise the rest through player sales to meet Financial Fair Play requirements.

“Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Lille’s Leny Yoro are among the centre-backs that have been monitored by United staff.

“But all three would wipe out the majority of, if not all, of United’s budget.”

Another season at Everton can benefit Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton know – and Branthwaite likely does, too – that another season at Goodison Park as the Toffees bid farewell to their traditional home will benefit the 21-year-old’s development further.

Already perhaps Everton’s most key player, and a staple of Sean Dyche’s organised and pragmatic unit, the recent England debutant will play every minute for which he is fit.

The counter-argument is that he would – or at least should – start every match for Manchester United, too. Ten Hag and the Red Devils hierarchy know the team’s leaky defence is a matter of urgency.

Not to mention that Branthwaite would bank Everton considerably more cash than anyone else in Dyche’s squad, as the club seek to remain the right side of the daunting prospect of the PSR line amid a chaotic takeover saga.

Branthwaite could become a club legend very quickly should he commit his immediate future to the Toffees.

As for Man United, with a budget of just £50m – if this report is anything to go by – then they simply cannot be serious about wanting to sign Branthwaite until players are sold.
