Vaclav Cerny will be sensing an ample opportunity to get back to his best for Rangers when they take on Tottenham this Thursday.
Ange Postecoglou – under pressure from some supporters – returns to Glasgow for the first time since leaving Celtic and while his Spurs side will be favourites at Ibrox [12 December], the Europa League clash will be one Cerny is looking forward to.
Tottenham have suffered from a leaky and inconsistent defence of late, with many players chopped and changed due to both injury and rotation.
Cerny is likely to continue his role on the right but endured an off day personally in the 3-0 win at Ross County on Sunday [8 December] as he was hooked by Philippe Clement.
Vaclav Cerny could enjoy a field day for Rangers v Tottenham
On a night set to boast an electric atmosphere, fuelled in part by the pantomime villain role filled by ex-Celtic boss Postecoglou, and in a clash that constitutes derby terms in European competition, Cerny will be hoping for a much-improved display.
He could turn out to be up against 18-year-old Archie Gray, who has been a regular in Europe for Spurs but a bit-part cameo maker in the Premier League.
Gray has featured all across the backline since arriving from Leeds United, despite being predominantly a midfielder. If the experienced Cerny is on song, he could give Gray a torrid time.
Alternatively, Destiny Udogie – Postecoglou’s first-choice left-back – could be put in for safety, though he is still just a youngster too and could be exploited by a right-hand side containing both Cerny and an attack-minded James Tavernier.
Lastly there is Ben Davies, who missed Spurs’ 4-3 home defeat by Chelsea on Sunday [8 December] with a thigh injury. It remains to be seen the options the Tottenham boss has ahead of him.
Spurs will not be anticipated to operate entirely full-strength at Ibrox, while Clement will be tempted to go gung-ho even with the Scottish League Cup final less than 72 hours later.
Cerny and his side will certainly be hoping Clement’s expected gamble pays off, which would deliver a superb night in Glasgow.
