Rangers shareholders, board members and commercial staff cannot complain if they’re met with a backlash over the pricing of their Ibrox 125 Heritage range.
The Gers released the range via a post on X (6 November), with several players modelling the kits, made to commemorate the 125th anniversary of their home stadium.
However, not only are the shirts very similar to the current home kit but fans are also being asked to pay exorbitant prices for a kit that will be worn on-field a total of once.
The club shop lists the shirts at £75 each, while a long-sleeve version stands at £80 – a hard sell to a fanbase already teetering on the edge of uproar.
Rangers fail to read the room with commemorative Ibrox kit release
There’s no question over whether fans love Ibrox – it is the second home to almost 50,000 people every week and a stadium which absolutely deserves a celebration of its rich history.
However, Gers decision-makers releasing a one-off kit to be worn on the stadium’s 125th anniversary – and then never again – smacks of short-sightedness, and the pricing smacks of a cash-grab.
Had the new kit, with its retro badge, collar and cuffs, been released as the home kit for the entire season, sales would likely have gone through the roof for a shirt harking back to the glory days.
However, doing so in a season which saw the Light Blues play their opening home games of the season at Hampden Park due to delayed redevelopments at Ibrox, would have left some serious explaining to do.
Much like today’s kit release, the Copland Road Stand debacle shone an unforgiving light on a boardroom which is out of its depth at Ibrox, and with fans sick of seeing their money spent in all the wrong places by those at the top, many will think twice before shelling out £75-plus on the new kits.
In other Rangers news, Stevie Clifford discussed a moment against Motherwell which made up his mind about one Gers player.
