Brighton midfielder Marc Leonard has emerged as a transfer target for Birmingham City in a potential blow for Rangers, according to BirminghamLive.

The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Northampton, registering five goals and six assists in League One in 2023-24.

However, Birmingham’s relegation to the English third-tier has seen them express their interest in signing Leonard, although it’s likely he’ll want to play at a level above League One next season.

That’s a sentiment shared by Northampton manager Jon Brady, who said last month that Leonard “has the talent to flourish” at either of the two Old Firm sides in the Scottish Premiership [Daily Record].

Rangers should push to complete Marc Leonard transfer

With interest ramping up and a £300,000 transfer fee mooted, it would be a missed opportunity for Rangers not to pursue a deal for Leonard.

A Glasgow-born Scotland under-21 international who was a member of the Gers’ academy early in his formative years, has shown that he is a reliable source of goals from midfield, and that’s exactly what Philippe Clement needs next season.

Marc Leonard has been linked with a move to Rangers this summer.

Ryan Jack and John Lundstram are two midfielders set to depart on free transfers this summer [Fraser Wilson], with the latter set for a move to Turkey, leaving spaces to fill in Clement’s squad overhaul this summer [Fanatik].

Leonard is not in the plans of Brighton, having made the last of his two first-team appearances in a 2021 EFL Cup tie, and a fee of just £300,000 should be an absolute no-brainer for the Ibrox hierarchy.

It remains to be seen if Rangers are in the race as tipped and can win it, but if Clement wants to add goals from midfield to his squad rebuild, Leonard could be just the ticket.

In other Rangers news, five young Gers players were mentioned in a scouting update.
