View: Thelwell must suck it up and realise he's set for significant loss on Everton senior man

Everton could be on the verge of selling centre-back Michael Keane – and that’s something the club needs to address sooner rather than later.

It appears as if the Toffees are actively looking for buyers for Michael Keane (Harry Watkinson, 1 August) alongside Mason Holgate and Neal Maupay. While some won’t be surprised by this, the idea of Keane departing after seven years at Goodison Park does feel strange.

It comes just a few weeks after it was initially noted that the Englishman could be on his way out of Everton Football Club (Alan Nixon, 7 July).

Everton face a Keane dilemma

One thing that needs to be remembered when it comes to Keane is that he’s only 31 years of age. Yes, some mistakes have crept into his game in recent times and he isn’t as much of a first-choice starter as he once was. With that being said, the dramatic calls for his departure feel greatly exaggerated.

The signing of Jake O’Brien certainly indicates that he’s slipping down the pecking order. For Kevin Thelwell, though, he needs to understand the magnitude of a decision like this. Keane has made over 200 appearances for Everton and in his first five years on Merseyside, he was seen as a really influential figure at the back.

Right now, there’s a lot of talk surrounding the future of Jarrad Branthwaite. It’d be great if he stayed at the club but in equal measure, the financial situation that Sean Dyche is dealing with may mean a departure is inevitable.

With Keane, you have a back-up option that can easily come in and provide some solid cover. He needs some time to get minutes under his belt but once he does, he should be utilised.
