Callum Olusesi has travelled with the Tottenham first team for the clash against Manchester City on Saturday, Lilywhite Rose reports.
According to the Spurs news outlet via X [23 November], the England Under-18s captain will join the first team in Manchester and could be in line to be named in the matchday squad.
The 17-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence through the youth ranks in North London and could be set to be rewarded with his first-team bow.
Ange Postecoglou ready to take risks for Tottenham v Manchester City
Rodrigo Bentancur will serve the first match of his seven-game FA suspension for comments about teammate Son Heung-min on Saturday [23 November], leaving Ange Postecoglou scrambling for options in central midfield.
While Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski are expected to be named as the midfield trio at the Etihad, Spurs have no other available senior options and have now turned to the academy to bulk up the matchday squad.
Olusesi has been making “great progress” in the academy setup this year, scoring three goals in eight appearances for the Under-21s.
However, while his potential inclusion in the squad is an exciting prospect for supporters, it is worth bearing in mind that facing the reigning Premier League champions at 17 could be a step too far for Olusesi.
Therefore, if he is named in the squad, he is likely to remain on the bench at the Etihad Stadium or be introduced in the closing minutes of the clash; any further involvement would only put the youngster in the firing line.
On the other hand, Manchester City are expected to also lean on the academy for the clash, with Mateo Kovacic joining Ballon d’Or winner Rodri on the injury list in Manchester.
If Spurs face a similar midfield that Pep Guardiola fielded in the 2-1 Carabao Cup victory, there could perhaps be no better opportunity to hand Olusesi his senior bow in the Premier League and for Postecoglou to run the rule on where he is at in his development.
Regardless, Tottenham supporters will be thrilled to see the boss continue to hand opportunities to the youth, but all that matters on Saturday is returning to North London with a point – or all three – secured.
In other Tottenham news, Graham Potter is now the favourite to succeed Ange Postecoglou at Spurs.
