'We need at Rangers' - Pundit view: Ace should be signed after 2 permanent exits confirmed

Damian Garcia is the kind of player that every team needs, especially Rangers after losing two senior midfielders, says Derek Ferguson.

Football Scotland reported on 5 June that the Light Blues were targeting the Uruguayan midfielder as part of Philippe Clement’s transfer window.

And after the club confirmed that both John Lundstram and Ryan Jack were departing as their contracts expire it has left the Ibrox midfield looking light and Ferguson, who used to man that area himself, believes Garcia would be a good addition in the mould of another ex-Gers man in Stuart McCall.

Clement has already signed three 20-year-olds in Jefte, Clinton Nsiala and Oscar Cortes, and Ferguson is a fan of signing youngsters from abroad as their willingness to make the move proves their hunger.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “They’d bring him in for a reason, they’ve done their homework. Everything that Philippe Clement is saying he’s doing at the moment with the recruitment, with Koppen coming in.

“They’re sourcing these young guys. They lose guys like Lundstram, like Ryan Jack, they weren’t just destroyers they could play as well of course.

“But this lad, he looks to be that type who enjoys that defensive midfield role, and I think every team needs one.

“You look at the Rangers teams even when I left, Stuart McCall came to Rangers. He was perfect for that role. He broke up play and when there was any playmakers in the opposition side he was very combative against them.

“You always need that type. Stuart could play as well, and I’m sure this boy can play.

“There’s obviously something about him they like, and I like that, again, as a young 20-year-old he’ll be hungry, he’ll have a lot to prove, and I think that’s what we need at Rangers.

“We need to get the balance right, you can’t just bring in all young players, but I just love the hunger of young players. They’re willing to go to another country to test themselves.“

Ryan Jack and John Lundstram leave Rangers as contracts expire

The news on 12 June that Garcia was set to sign a new contract at Penarol [Dario Alberti] containing a release clause worth $10million [£7.9m] undoubtedly throws a spanner into the works for Rangers.

With the amount of business Clement and Nils Koppen have to do at Ibrox this summer it is unrealistic for them to pay that, even though John Bennett has made clear there is money to spend [Daily Record, 14 June], but while it prevents him moving for a bargain-basement price with just months left on his deal it may not 100% rule out a transfer being agreed.

And the Light Blues certainly need at least a couple of reinforcements in central midfield, so if Garcia doesn’t prove to be one they will need to push ahead with a move for Connor Barron and then continue to look elsewhere.

In other Rangers news, John Bennett has assured that the Light Blues will have money to spend this summer.
