Former Rangers loanee Fabio Siva’s dad has admitted that the Portuguese forward could have moved to Celtic instead of Ibrox.

The 21-year-old was Philippe Clement’s first signing in Glasgow during the January transfer window as he joined on loan from Wolves for the second half of the campaign, scoring six times in 25 appearances.

Silva was criticised by pundits and fans alike for a lot of his displays in a Gers shirt, but his father Jorge Silva has admitted that the Wolves forward didn’t understand why the supporters were so quick to turn on him.

As quoted by the Daily Record on Saturday (9 June) he said: “At the beginning, Fabio had the opportunity to choose other clubs, even in Scotland. Could he have gone to Celtic? Yes, he could have gone there.

“Many people told him to go there because the way they play is maybe closer to Fabio’s abilities. But he chose Rangers.

“People spoke to us about his religion because he’s a Catholic but Fabio doesn’t show that to everyone. Even so, he told me as his father that he just wanted to play for Rangers.

“He loved the club and the fans. He just doesn’t understand that after one game (the Old Firm derby), everyone changed and went against the boy. It was a good time for him at Rangers. All the staff there helped him.”

Will Fabio Silva return to Rangers after Celtic transfer admission?

Silva’s loan spell at Ibrox was just as quick as it will be forgettable. While the forward impressed in flashes, namely away to Benfica, for the most part, he flattered to deceive when playing in a Rangers shirt.

His antics both off and on the field drew plenty of criticism, as he was accused of being a cheat by Chris Sutton while also being slammed by Andy Halliday for his celebration where he seemed to take aim at the home crowd.

Ultimately, the 21-year-old’s time in Glasgow will be remembered for his antics off of the field than it will be for his displays on it. There is absolutely no chance that the Light Blues will bring him back this summer transfer window.

This revelation that he could have played for Celtic changes nothing and feels like a last-ditch attempt for Silva and his entourage to try and get the Gers fanbase back onside after a difficult end to the Premiership campaign.
