John Wenham believes Sergio Reguilón would demand at least 80 per cent of his remaining wages if he were to terminate his contract with Tottenham.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose can’t see any other club matching the defender’s current wages in January.

As reported by CaughtOffside (9 November), Reguilón is keen to terminate his Tottenham contract in January in search of regular first-team football elsewhere.

And while ex-Spurs scout Bryan King has urged Tottenham to work on the player’s exit, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think a termination will be straightforward.

“I don’t see any incentive for him to leave unless someone else is willing to match his wages,” Wenham said.

“Tottenham are paying him £100,000-per-week, and he has quite rightly, from his point of view, stuck to that contract.

“Unless he agrees to terminate the last six months of his deal, I think he will remain in North London. However, even then, I imagine he will demand at least 80 per cent of his remaining salary.”

Tottenham to terminate Sergio Reguilón’s contract in January?

As of January 1, Reguilón would still be due to earn £2.6million in North London.

Therefore, if he were to demand 80 per cent of this, and Spurs were to rip up his deal as soon as January arrives, the club would still need to pay Reguilón a little over £2million.

As a result, while cancelling the player’s contract seems ideal, considering he isn’t in Ange Postecoglou’s plans, it isn’t that straightforward, and also not that cost-effective.

Daniel Levy will no doubt hold out hope that a club might pay a fee to sign the 27-year-old in January. However, with under a year left on Reguilón’s contract, that ship seems to have sailed.

Therefore, Spurs aren’t left with many appealing options.

In other Tottenham news, Levy’s stance on bringing Jack Grealish to the club has emerged amid transfer interest.
