Ben Davies has been limited to just two appearances this season but his performance against Man City on Saturday showcased his ability to contribute for Tottenham.

Tottenham pulled off a surprise victory over City on 23 November, winning 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium and Davies was brandished as “magnificent” by Ashley Williams on Match of the Day.

With Micky Van De Ven unavailable. Davies was called upon and he played a crucial role in Spurs’ clean sheet and undoubtedly demonstrated to Ange Postecoglou that he has a role to play this season.

Having featured just once prior to the City encounter, it was a big ask for the Welshman to slot into the backline seamlessly but that is exactly what he did.

According to FotMob, Davies completed 54 out of 65 attempted passes on Saturday, a completion rate of 83 per cent.

His ability to play the ball from the back was pivotal in their attempts to break through the press of Pep Guardiola’s side with 75 touches in the game, the most of anyone in the Spurs team.

Only eight of those attempted passes were long balls, demonstrating his composure at the back with the ball at his feet.

Of course, against a side who possess as much attacking threat as City do, Davies had to be on it defensively and having won 50 per cent of aerial duels, he was.

Added to that, the Welsh international made an impressive six clearances throughout the game, ensuring any City threat was nullified with seven defensive actions in total.

While he’s unlikely to feature too often, his performance certainly impressed and demonstrated the depth that Postecoglou has defensively and he is someone the Australian boss simply cannot ignore.
