John Wenham is fearful that Cristian Romero could soon seek a Tottenham exit after the defender’s recent transfer admission.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose isn’t entirely convinced that the 26-year-old sees his long-term future in North London.
It comes after Romero told ESPN F90 (via The Mirror, 3 August), “I always strive to play at my best. I have a lot of respect for Tottenham.
“They’ve always given me a lot of support here, so I like playing here. I don’t think about other clubs or their possibilities.
“I know there’s a lot of talk about a possible move, but I’m calm. At my club, I play differently to the national team, more forward. I still have years left in Europe and I want to see where I can go. Hopefully this year we can win a title at Tottenham.”
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is worried about the underlying message within Romero’s quotes.
“I think those quotes were both positive and negative,” Wenham said.
“The first few paragraphs indicated that he is very much happy at Tottenham. However, toward the end, it felt like he sent the club a bit of an exit ultimatum.
“He said that he wants us to be challenging for titles this season. But what if the club doesn’t, what if they don’t reach those heights?
“That leaves you wondering how he might feel in that situation.”
Cristian Romero to seek exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?
Romero is one of the world’s best central defenders.
He recently became a two-time Copa America winner with Argentina after lifting the World Cup with his nation in Qatar in 2022.
Therefore, due to all of his success with the national team, he will no doubt be keen to replicate that level of success at club level.
As a result, if Spurs don’t kick on under Ange Postecoglou this year, the Argentine could soon become unhappy in North London.
