'We're aware...' - Journalist issues 'Official' Tavernier bid update at Rangers

Rangers have yet to receive an official offer from Turkey to sign James Tavernier ahead of the close of the last transfer windows, according to Joshua Barrie.

The Rangers Review journalist said on the outlet’s YouTube channel on 10 September that exit links to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Besiktas are “not going away” but suggested the Super Lig side would need to clear overseas spaces in their squad if they are to move for the Gers captain.

Rangers were prepared to listen to offers for the 32-year-old during the summer and rejected a bid from Tabzonspor [Sky Sports, 21 August], and Philippe Clement has indicated intent to look into the free agent market following the Scottish deadline, but no offer has yet come in.

Barrie said (14m 25s): “There’s not been, as far as we’re aware, an official bid or an official approach to Rangers ahead of these final few days of the window.”

Philippe Clement to risk Rangers captain exit after deadline?

Whether the Light Blues and Clement should contemplate allowing their record-breaking skipper leave at this stage is one thing.

But the choice is moot if none of the clubs linked to a move give them a decision to make, even if Tavernier is ready to leave after being targeted for abuse after the 3-0 loss at Celtic.

Four Istanbul suitors and a pair from Qatar are reportedly queuing up while their windows are still open as a result of the fallout from the Old Firm derby, according to HITC on 6 September.

But Haber Turk suggested on 10 September that a move won’t happen until at least January due to a lack of replacement capabilities.

If it is truly pressing for Tavernier to depart now in an attempt to quell a toxic atmosphere that has developed around him then, in theory, there is direct cover at right-back.

Dujon Sterling is the next in line to finally play in the position he was signed to cover for himself when he arrived from Chelsea a year ago [Chris Jack, 17 June], and Deadline Day loan arrival Neraysho Kasanwirjo also has plenty of experience on the right.

But with Clement short of options in defensive midfield, and now on the wings thanks to injury to Rabbi Matondo [Football Scotland, 5 September], he would possibly he asking for trouble to reduce his options further at this stage.

In other Rangers news, Clement has now entered “sacked territory” at Ibrox after what he said.
