West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek could still be a “very important player” for the club despite talks of the club being willing to sell.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-West Ham striker Frank McAvennie believes Soucek, 29, could still have a future at the club but admits he was “surprised” to see him start against Aston Villa.
It’s been a busy transfer window for West Ham so far but their central midfield seems to be a position new manager Julen Lopetegui is relatively happy with.
Only Argentina World Cup winner Guido Rodriguez has been brought in as a new first-team option in the middle of the park so far, but the club are looking to sign PSG star Carlos Soler.
Football Insider revealed (August 26) that the club’s move for the Spanish midfielder has hit a stumbling block.
Tomas Soucek is still a big player for West Ham
Since making the move from Slavia Prague to East London, Soucek has established himself as one of the club’s stand-out performers, making 196 appearances and scoring 30 goals.
The Czech midfielder has already put his stamp on this season for the Hammers, scoring the opener in their 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace.
“I was surprised to see him start at the weekend”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“I thought he was going to put his team in, make a statement and that would be how it goes but he didn’t do that.
“I think he could be a very important player, he never got dropped by David Moyes but I think he need to be left out for a bit just to give him a kick up the backside again.
“That could do him good because he’s been playing every game.
“Sometimes when you leave them out and give them a wake-up call that’s all they need and they come back to their best.
“I think there are midfield players that will be getting in above Soucek.
“But the manager will have told him because you’ve got to tell the players if they’re not going to get a lot of game time or they’re not going to get a lot of minutes.
“He has to be honest with the boys and give them the last few days of the window to try find a club.”
