What Vincent Kompany said about Tottenham signing Wilson Odobert's defending and the two positions he can play

Tottenham Hotspur announced their fifth signing of the summer transfer market in an unexpected fashion on Friday morning.

Wilson Odobert has finalised his move from Burnley to Tottenham in a deal which could be worth as much as £32m.

Ange Postecoglou has finally got another addition to his attack as Tottenham add yet another young prospect to their squad.

Spurs now have a number of players who are capable of playing on either side of the wing with Heung-min Son finally able to return to his natural position.

After signing Dominic Solanke, the wingers are going to be able to stick out wide with Richarlison also adding squad depth through the middle.

But it seems as if Odobert could be used in an unexpected position due to his ability to help out defensively.

Tottenham signing Wilson Odobert could play in unexpected position

Daniel Levy was handed a real blow just last week after Chelsea beat Tottenham to the signing of Pedro Neto.

This has left Tottenham looking for other options to add in the right-wing position and they have landed on Odobert.

Having played under Kompany at Turf Moor, the 19-year-old has been played in a number of different positions due to his versatility.

Despite suffering relegation last season with the Clarets, Kompany admitted he had been left so impressed by the winger’s ability to defend having also played in the number 10 role.

“He’s just a player with such a bright future ahead of him,” Kompany told the Burnley Express in March.

“It’s funny how he actually benefited from an injury to another of our star players, Luca Koleosho.

“But he’s clocking games in the Premier League, he’s responsible with his defensive duties, he’s able to play in different positions now, out wide and centrally. He’s able to beat people, outside and centrally.

“He’s got a goal in him and an assist in him as well, so he’s a very positive player for us this season.”

Ange Postecoglou adores versatile players at Tottenham

Having versatile players is something which Postecoglou clearly rates very highly when it comes to his players at Tottenham.

Dejan Kulusevski is the prime example of that with the Sweden international having played out wide, central midfield and even up front this summer.

And Postecoglou’s belief in versatile can also be seen through the signing of Archie Gray.

The 18-year-old is a player who is going to offer Tottenham with so much this season having shown he is capable of playing in midfield, right-back and centre-back over pre-season.

So the signing of Odobert feels like a natural fit for the Lilywhites.
