Philippe Clement must be given time and support to rebuild the Rangers team, Davie Robertson has said.

The Belgian arrived at Ibrox last October, bringing a new lease of life to the club after Michael Beale’s reign, already lifting the League Cup at Hampden Park in his first season in Scotland.

However, Clement has received a lot of criticism after the Gers failed to lift the Scottish Premiership title, being pipped by Old Firm rivals Celtic, also losing out in the Scottish Cup final.

Robertson, who played for Rangers between 1991 and 1997, wants to see the manager remain at Ibrox.

Speaking via the Daily Record on Wednesday (31 July), he said: “Rangers’ tradition has been stability in the manager’s office – there have only been 19 men in 152 years. Whatever happens, Clement needs to be given the time and support to rebuild the team himself.

“Hopefully that’s what he gets. At the start of the season, you have to be as optimistic as you can because anything is possible. No one expected him to produce what he did when he came in.

“Winning the League Cup, beating Betis away, getting the team back in the title race – that all showed he was capable of working wonders with not a lot.”

Philippe Clement to remain as Rangers manager?

The Gers look to be at the beginning of a new journey, with Clement and Nils Koppen working tirelessly to complete an overhaul of the current squad ahead of next season.

With the likes of Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, and even Connor Goldson leaving the club now, it almost feels like the passing of the torch at Ibrox, and Clement needs to oversee his changes.

While the manager will be under pressure to get the season off to a positive start, fans must not panic if some of the early results do not put many points on the board. The league campaign is a marathon, not a sprint.

The team’s pre-season has clearly left a lot to be desired, with losses to Ajax, Manchester United and Birmingham City, followed by a 4-4 draw against Union Berlin, but nobody should read too far into these.

The real test will be during the Champions League qualification stages that are on the horizon, which will truly test the new squad and Clement’s managerial skills.

In other Rangers news, the Gers still have the chance to sign Albion Rrahmani after his Rapid Bucuresti absence was explained.
