Andy Walker raves about player Clement is in talks with Rangers board to sign

Andy Walker insists Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland has the pedigree to shine as a Rangers player should he make the switch between clubs.

The Daily Record reports [30 July] that Gers boss Philippe Clement has already held talks with club chiefs over making a move for the prolific ace.

Shankland has also been touted as a target for Celtic, but the Light Blues are said to be in pole position to complete a deal [HITC, 30 July].

Speaking on Go Radio [30 July], Walker said: “If Lawrence Shankland was a Celtic player, he would score goals.

“Everyone talks about what Shankland can’t do – and maybe that cost [Scotland] a bit in the Euros, where he deserved a bit more game time.

“But give him a heavier strip and I think he will meet the challenge. Whether it’s Celtic or Rangers, I think he has a pedigree that tells you he will score goals in the top flight of Scottish football.”

Moving for Shankland really is a no-brainer. Links with unknown players from abroad will always pique the interest of supporters, but the Hearts skipper is tried and tested in the Scottish Premiership.

With a year to run on his contract, and therefore leverage for the Gers to negotiate a favourable fee, this is a deal the club need to pursue as a priority.

Celtic are also interested, which is no surprise, and that only makes it all the more important that Rangers get a deal over the line first.

Cyriel Dessers had a mixed first campaign at Ibrox and Clement would love a player who can tuck away chances more efficiently. That is where Shankland comes into the equation.

As Walker says, Shankland’s reputation may have taken a slight hit during Scotland’s disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, but we know for a fact he can score goals for fun in this division. It is over to the board to get him in.
