Keith Jackson was amazed after being told Rangers should’ve had a penalty against Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final.
The Daily Record journalist was shocked when former referee Des Roache revealed that the Gers were right to call for a spot kick after Liam Scales fouled Vaclav Cerny at Hampden Park as the game ended in a stalemate after regulation time.
At that point, the game was 3-3, with Philippe Clement’s team eventually losing 5-4 in the penalty shootout on Sunday [15 December].
Speaking on Hotline Live [15 December], Jackson said: “Wow. So wait a minute, Des, we’re just sat out here saying, ‘Brilliant, well done, John Beaton and your team, absolutely terrific’.
“And you’re telling me they missed a stick-on penalty kick.”
Rangers should be proud of Hampden Park performance v Celtic
After what happened in the cup final, the Ibrox faithful won’t have any complaints from their team.
Clement set his side up perfectly as the Gers went toe-to-toe with Celtic, stifling Brendan Rodgers’ team in the middle of the park.
The Light Blues are 11 points behind their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish Premiership, but that gap was negligent at Hampden Park, and the Belgian manager needs to be credited for it.
Rangers had a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign, but Clement has turned the tide slightly in his favour after questions about his future in the Ibrox dugout.
The Gers were arguably the better of the two teams against Celtic, and if not for an inexcusable error from Beaton and VAR, would have likely retained their title
It is not the first time that the SFA have faced serious questions about the standard of officiating, and based on this embarrassment, it won’t be the last.
In other Rangers news, the Old Firm rivals will likely be charged by the Scottish FA after what happened at Hampden.
