'You're not trying' – Jason Cundy rips into Everton live on air after Brentford draw

Everton are simply happy to exist as a low-end Premier League club every season, Jason Cundy has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (23 November, 7:13pm), Cundy told a Toffees fan that their 0-0 draw with Brentford was a reminder that their current ambition only amounts to staying in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche’s side did have 27 shots to no avail against the Bees at Goodison Park, but Cundy argued that as long as the club are between 14th and 16th in the Premier League table, they’re happy.

He said: “Everton – you’re just existing, in the Premier League.

“You’re not thriving, you’re not living, you’re not trying to do anything, you’re just hanging around just above that relegation zone – that’s where you live.

“You live around like 14th, 15th, 16th – that’s just where home is.”

Change of direction can’t come soon enough for Everton

Going based on recent seasons, aiming for the mid-to-lower reaches of the Premier League table has indeed been the sum-total of Everton’s ambition, but that could all be about to change soon.

Dan Friedkin’s impending takeover, which looks set to be greenlit and completed before Christmas, is likely to finally draw the Toffees out of the mire they’ve seemingly been stuck in for most of the decade.

While Friedkin’s arrival will coincide with a crucial January transfer window, Evertonians won’t be expecting to see a Newcastle-esque mid-season spending spree to completely transform their fortunes.

However, the club no longer being owned by Farhad Moshiri, and moving to their new stadium in six months will undoubtedly create an optimism not seen for several years in the Blue half of Merseyside.

Fans looking onwards and upwards means that the club’s standards will have to follow suit, and that’ll only increase the pressure on Dyche to turn the Toffees’ ailing form around in the coming weeks.

In other Everton news, the Blues face a January transfer decision concerning an out-of-favour youngster currently out on loan.
