Si Ferry has told Philippe Clement that he should “100 per cent” keep James Tavernier at Rangers beyond the August transfer deadline.

The Light Blues captain has been surrounded by speculation and linked with a summer Ibrox exit with reports suggesting Turkish side Trabzonspor have made more than one approach to prize him away from Ibrox [Rangers Review, 23 July].

While pundits and supporters have been divided over whether the time is right to cash in on the 32-year-old, Open Goal presenter Ferry believes the Gers would be stupid to let Tavernier go in the next few weeks.

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (12 August, 19:10) he said: “Oh 100 per cent mate. If I could take one Rangers player and put him in the Celtic team it would be Tav.

“100 per cent, definitely mate.”

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer speculation?

For so much of the summer, it has seemed as though Tavernier was nailed on to depart Ibrox ahead of the new season as he missed multiple pre-season games and was linked with moves to multiple different clubs.

But as soon as the league campaign rolled around, the Englishman was straight back into the starting XI as he admitted that the entirety of his focus was directed to being a success with the Gers rather than a move away.

His performances have steadily improved over the opening weeks of the campaign and there will be a feeling around supporters that they may now be better off sticking instead of twisting as Ferry suggested.

Of course, things can change incredibly quickly at this stage of the transfer window and should a big money offer arrive for Tavernier’s signature, Clement and those around him will have a major decision to make.

Until then, it does seem as though fans will have to get used to the idea that the 32-year-old could be a regular fixture in Glasgow for the next six months at least.
