Philippe Clement will need to pursue two new signings at number 10 as a minimum with Rangers set to sell from their current options, says Chris Jack.
The Rangers Review journalist said on the outlet’s 6 July Morning Briefing show that with Ianis Hagi and Todd Cantwell confirmed by the manager as being exit-bound and the likes of Kieran Dowell and Alex Lowry not up to scratch it will require multiple new arrivals to restock the position.
Clement confirmed ahead of the Dynamo Kyiv clash that Hagi will be leaving having previously revealing that Cantwell has asked to go as well [Sky Sports, 25 July], with both currently involved in the B Team.
Jack said (5m 10s): “Look at someone like Alex Lowry, he’s fallen down the pecking order, it’s hard to see him making an impact.
“That brings you into Dowell, Lawrence, Hagi, not really at it. Todd Cantwell was the main figure in that number 10 role, he’s decided he wants to move on as well.
“If Rangers can get as much back through the door in terms of transfer fees for a number of those players and then go and reinvest that, it’s not just a case of you go and bring one in. I think you’re looking at two at least to give you a bit of strength and a bit of depth in that area.”
Alex Lowry and Kieran Dowell could also leave Rangers
With the squad as it currently is Clement would probably be better served using another defensive midfielder instead of a number 10 and letting Mohamed Diomande roam forward.
The Ivorian and Connor Barron have the makings of a good central midfield partnership but they look like they can be bypassed with ease when out of possession.
It is odd that Clement seems so intent on fielding a number 10 when he has never been convinced by Cantwell, who from the outside appears to be the clear top choice for the position.
And with no hope of bringing Hagi back into the fold it is Tom Lawrence who occupied the role at Hearts.
The former Derby captain had some very good moments at Tynecastle but doesn’t look like the quality option that Rangers need behind the striker so it is yet another position that needs addressing before the deadline, with exits required first.
Time is ticking away with the departures still not sorted, so there will be pressure to get ins and outs complete before the deadline.
As with so many areas in this squad the overhaul is a nice idea in theory but is proving to be far more of a mess in practice.
Hagi is reported to have a deal lined up to move to Fiorentina [Digi Sport, 26 July] and Cantwell is believed to have various suitors in England and Europe [Scottish Sun, 22 July], so offloading both sooner rather than later has to be the first priority.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are expected to move on a senior man in order to pursue an expensive goalscorer after links increased again.
