Aberdeen face tribunal fee sweat as Barron ready to snub England for Rangers - report

Connor Barron is prepared to forego a move to England or Italy in order to discuss signing for Philippe Clement’s “new-look” Rangers squad, according to the Scottish Sun.

And the paper has reported on their website (12 June) that if he agrees a deal it could leave Aberdeen “sweating” on the outcome of a tribunal decision if the two clubs cannot agree a fee.

The Dons would be due compensation for the 21-year-old if he leaves on the expiry of his contract this summer, and they could get as much as £500,000 due to cross-border rules if he went to Italy.

But while it was previously believed Barron’s preference was to go to England, where Swansea and Middlesbrough have been linked, or abroad, he is now said to be open to an Ibrox switch with Rangers now front of the queue to sign him.

Relations between the Light Blues and the Dandies are far from the easiest and have previously been tipped as a potential stumbling block for a Barron move.

So there is potentially every chance that should the Scot head to Glasgow the two sides aren’t able to come to an agreement over how much will be paid.

Should that decision be left up to a tribunal it could prove a relative bargain for Rangers, so Aberdeen might be hoping the midfielder leaves the country.

It would be a show of confidence in Clement if Barron does decide to stay within the Scottish Premiership and join the Belgian’s overhaul.

Rangers
Connor Barron could follow in the footsteps of Ryan Jack as the midfielder leaves Rangers.

The manager and compatriot Nils Koppen are seeking to succeed where Michael Beale failed a year ago in revamping a side which ultimately fell short of Celtic again.

Three signings have already been secured in Jefte, Oscar Cortes and Clinton Nsiala, but with a host of players leaving on free transfers, including midfielders John Lundstram and Ryan Jack, there is plenty more to do and Barron could be a strong acquisition.

Jack spent seven seasons at Ibrox after making his own move from Pittodrie so his exit could see another Dons midfielder follow in his footsteps.

In other Rangers news, a long-term contract offer has been made to a sought-after player the Light Blues want.
