Derek Ferguson is “very impressed” with Connor Barron and believes he will improve if he signs for Rangers this summer after hearing a move was now on the cards.

According to the Scottish Sun (12 June) the Light Blues are now leading the race to sign the Scottish midfielder, who is currently on holiday in Portugal but could return for a medical, as he is prepared to overlook interest from England and Italy to join Philippe Clement’s rebuild at Ibrox.

Ferguson confirms he had independently heard the same information and believes the Aberdeen youngster will now be “flying back” to Glasgow.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I heard that about an hour ago. I’d have got in trouble if I’d have brought it up. Yep, the wee fella’s a good player, definitely is in that midfield role.

“He’s not going to cost us anything as well, his contract’s up. I think he’s over in Portugal at the minute on holiday so I think he’s going to be flying back.

“If there’s a deal to be done he’s a good player, very impressed with him, he was in the running with the boys for the young player of the year.

“So yes, he’s not going to cost us anything, we can improve him. I think he’ll be better in a dominant Rangers side.”

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement could be about to sign a new Rangers midfielder.

Clement has already added two defenders to his squad and brought winger Oscar Cortes back, but a move to land Barron would be a major step towards addressing the midfield deficiencies.

After the exit of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram the Belgian has now-permanent signing Mohamed Diomande and probably Dujon Sterling as his top options, unless Nico Raskin can rebound from a significant regression in his first full season at Ibrox.

A deal for Scotland Under-21 international Barron is by no means wrapped up yet but it is looking positive if it has been reported and the information has been going around independently already.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues are closer to finding out if they will land a key attacker as a record-breaking deal is now imminent.
